Nigeria has been listed
among top ten global markets for Smartphone along side South Africa and Egypt
according to a latest Ericsson Mobility Report.
As at April 2015, Nigeria’s
telecom regulator Nigeria Communications Commission put the mobile subscriber
database at 196,941,125.
The report predicts
that in 2020, Smartphone subscription will hit 6.1 billion with 80 per cent of the number coming from Asia Middle East and Africa (MEA)
According to the report, the total African mobile
subscription for the first quarter of 2015 stands at 910 million with 21
million new subscriptions added in the quarter.
The report asserted that in markets such as Africa,
there were rampant cases of multiple ownership of mobile numbers, thus
increasing the total number of subscriptions.
“The number of subscriptions exceeds the population
in many countries. This is largely due to inactive subscriptions and multiple
device ownership, for example - for business and private use, or to optimise
pricing by using different operators for different calls,” reads the report.
The report noted that increase in acquisition of Smartphones
was “due to greater affordability in developing markets such as Asia Pacific,
the Middle East, and Africa”.
By 2020, the report forecasts that there will be
continued use of 2G broadband in Africa primarily due to low cost entry phones.
According t o the report, sales of feature phones
would stand of$5.1 billion in the Middle East and $4.3 billion in Africa.
Rima Qureshi, Senior Vice President, Chief Strategy
Officer, Ericsson, says: 'This immense growth in advanced mobile technology and
data usage, driven by a surge in mobile connectivity and smartphone uptake,
will makes today's big data revolution feel like the arrival of a floppy disk.
We see the potential for mass-scale transformation, bringing a wealth of
opportunities for telecom operators and others to capture new revenue streams.
But it also requires greater focus on cost efficient delivery and openness to
new business models to compete and remain effective.'
