Wali succeds Jega as INEC boss



Ambassador (Dr.) Mohammad Ahmad Wali, a national commissioner of the INEC from Sokoto State, has been named the new chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. This position, it was learnt will be on acting capacity pending when President Muhammad Buhari will appoint an INEC boss.

Wali took over from Prof. Attahiru Jega whose tenure expired today. Incidentally, Wali's tenure as commissioner also expires on August 11, 2015; a position he has held since 2010.

Prof Jega who was appointed chairman of the commission by former President Goodluck Jonathan on June 30, 2010 conducted two elections – 2011 and 2015 general elections which was adjudged free and fair by observers from across the globe. 

Wali is a Muslim, Fulani who hails from Sanyima town in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State, in the North-West geopolitical zone of Nigeria. 

Before his appointment as National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Ambassador Wali was a Visiting Reader (Associate Professor) to the Department of Political Science, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, and Chief Executive Officer, Development Strategies International (DSI).
Ambassador Wali is a member of various committees of INEC and the Chairman of the Tenders Board.
